When Jim asked me to contribute to this book, I was incredibly humbled and honored to do so. On a personal level, it is inspirational to see how Jim has risen through the ranks of his organization and also become a leader in the fire service. And it is gratifying to see that he authored a bestselling book that has impacted the health and well-being of so many firefighters across the globe.
I was not surprised, however, to read the great information Jim has shared in this book. As I read through it, all I could keep thinking about was how valuable his message is for future and current fire officers as they navigate the choppy waters of leadership. Firefighter Success’ content and format make it easy to read and then reference later on—whether you need specific information or just a little encouragement for a difficult situation.
The 20 core principles Jim has provided are the perfect format for covering a variety of situations that you are sure to encounter as a firefighter and fire officer. With the Action Steps found at the end of each chapter, this book is a complete officer development guide for beginners and veterans alike. Additionally, these Action Steps can be used by company officers to develop their future officers. What an enormously valuable tool!
My hope is you find the value in this book that I did and that you will refer to it often. Share its information with everyone: aspiring firefighters, rookies, veterans, future and current officers, etc. Information is best when it is shared with those who desire to know more and those who want to improve. Leadership and personal development are not finite—they require the pursuit of excellence, which is a continuous journey. Just like any other skill, both are perishable.
